The Road to Becoming an Environmentally Sustainable Groom Shop
Little Brown Dog is an environmentally responsible business (Scott, Melissa’s brother and former business partner, was really into environmental sustainability). We’re constantly trying to make things even more sustainable (to our knowledge we’re the only groom shop in Colorado focused on becoming a fully environmentally sustainable business), but as of this writing (November 2nd, 2015) these are the main things we’re doing to reduce our environmental impact:
- Towel-free grooming
- This might sound strange, but we don’t use towels to dry your pets after their bath. We use super durable synthetic drying chamois. One small chamois is used to dry your pet, no matter how big or small.
- Using drying chamois has a number of benefits, but these are the main ones:
- Using them gets your pet dry much faster than cotton towels
- This means your pet spends less time on the drying table under the force dryer (basically a huge hairdryer)
- Which means less stress for your pet
- And less wasted electricity used to dry them
- They get your pet dryer than you can with cotton towels… sounds strange, but it’s true
- One drying chamois per pet = way less laundry
- They’re crazy durable… we haven’t actually calculated the number of washes they can take before needing to be replaced, but it’s definitely a lot more than cotton
- Using them gets your pet dry much faster than cotton towels
- We use a recirculating bathing system which greatly reduces the amount of water (and shampoo) needed per bath. Less waste, superior results
- We use pet safe walkway de-icer. As paw and environmentally friendly as possible
- Our business cards are super high quality MOO Green cards. They’re printed on MOO Green stock which is 100% recycled fiber and 100% chlorine free. Pretty sweet.
- All shop lighting is low-wattage LED
- We heat the shop with a super HE furnace
- Our parking area is “paved” with permeable crushed recycled concrete
- We’re constantly working to reduce our trash output
- We’re a nearly paperless business
- We don’t do any direct marketing—no junk mail or mailers
- We recycle everything recyclable that comes into the shop
- Denver County Waste Management Composting system- It turns out there’s a lot involved in composting the amount of hair clippings we generate! But here’s the scope of what we incorporate:
- Pet hair… tons of pet hair
- Food scraps
- Some junk mail and most cardboard
- Plant clippings
